I'm rebuilding a 10 hp Evinrude 1960, did ignition, carb rebuild aand impeller.
Has good compression, and spark. Starts up and stalls after 5 or 10 seconds.
7 or 8 pulls later it fires up again and runs another 5 or 10 sceonds. Again and again. I rebuilt the carb twice, carb was very crusty when I originally took it apart. New float, seat, pin and clip. Did not replace freeze plug, set high speed needle 1 turn out, low speed needle 1 1/2 turn out. Does it sound like float adjustment, crud behind freze plug, or something else.

I believe your motor has a glass sediment bowl under the carb bowl. Remove the filter inside and try it. If that filter's clogged, that's exactly what it'll do.

Removed filter, no difference. I syncronized carb to armature plate, no difference. Removed carb adjusted float to parellel, no difference. How do I remove a freeze plug, is there an easy way.

Use a sharp punch, put the carb in a vise and punch through the plug just enough to pierce it and pry it out. Install convex side up and punch it flat with a punch and 3/8" socket extension, seal the edges with clear nailpolish.

What does "did ignition" mean?

Coils, condensers, points, plug wires, plugs, fuel lines. Do you think removeing freeze plug for access to clean might make a difference?

If the idle ports are plugged most definetely. As long as you got the ignition part down pat then the carb is next. I'll go down the list-

points set to 0.20 on the cam?
correct wires used, not auto wires?
did you screw the wires into the coils?
Coils installed correctly and not to far/close to the flywheel?
Set the plug gap/used the correct plugs?
Have you checked for good spark using a tester?

Points set at .020
Used 7mm copper conductor wire
I did not screw wires into coils, pushed them in.
Coils adjusted flush to machined surface.
Plug gap .030
Got good spark using spark tester.

Guess I will tear down amature plate and screw in plug wires and double check everything.
I will remove freeze plug and clean idle ports..

When starting this motor, I can only start it with throttle advanced
about 3/4. Might this be indicitive of plugged idle ports.

I appreciate the advice, this is a learning experience for me.

I think you need to clean the idle circuit behind the welch plug also.

Try spraying some 24:1 premix in the carb when it's running those 5-7 seconds and see if you can keep it running. If yes, then it's fuel related.

Also, on the odd chance that it's fuel pump related, try pumping the bulb on the hose to see if it will keep running also. But I'd clean the carb, especially since you said it was crudded up to start with.

Replace the fuel lines under the cowl if they're old and hardened..
I used canned 'duster' air w/straw to confirm/blow out carb passages. Make sure the carb vent to atmosphere is clear. There's a hole on top of the bowl chamber that needs to be vented to the outside of the carb for the bowl to fill correctly. Good luck!
