THis motor hasn't run in decades. I changed the water pump and gas lines (first time for me), mixed a 24:1 ratio and presto, she fired up and ran well, very well. The shroud is an 8.5 out of 10 and the motor was used untill 1970, and then only a few times. I don't think any one looked at this boat because the motor was so dated. Guess that is why I looked, as I like old things with character. Kind of like old people with a history. Anyway, I suppose it could have been a disaster too and I'd be looking for some 1990 something motor to power the old girl around. Just sort of wondering what this 18 would cost if I were to find one for sale by itself? I guess it's one that will get passed down when I get passed over.

They made lots of those motors, so they aren't rare. Price is difficult to determine as there are many variables, like your location, time of year, condition of motor. I've paid as little as $35 for a "barn find" and as much as $150 for a pretty decent motor. But I buy them to fix up and re-sell, so I'm not looking for a keeper motor. There are lots of them out there for $200, $300, even $400-500. Higher prices would be for a cosmetically restored, good running, completely serviced motor (all new electricals, rebuilt carb, new wires. new fuel lines, new water pump, re-sealed gearcase, etc.) In the end, it's what someone is willing to pay.

I'll add that even 100% fully factory original restored, its still a 1960s motor and not everyone will want to buy it simply becaise of age. Just like why you think no one came to look at the boat it was on: its a dated, 55+ yrs old, motor.

And I love 'em, esp late 50s OBs.
