1960 Fisherman...fuel pump question...

All,
Last few weeks been picking up a few project outbords (1950's) and ran into a 1960 Evinrude Fisherman (5.5HP).

My 10 yr old son took a interest to it but it was missing a few parts. So being something I would like him to tackle....we were able to pick up the missing parts very reasonable from a few fellas my son and I have met in our outboard projects.

Anyways we usually replace all the under the hood "soft\common wear out parts" on a outboard but we have never worked on a 1960 or newer outboard. We are more of a 1950's Johny Rude collector\tinkerer.

So on the 1960 I was thinking on replacing the following;
ignition points
ignition coils
wires
plugs
wire caps (plug to wire)
carb kit
lower unit seal kit
impellor
thermostat
fuel pump\fuel pump kit

The point of this post is all the above parts are easily obtainable but I noticed that the fuel pump/kit seems to be only available in a new fuel pump form not a replaceable diaphram/spring/seal kit as I hoped/expected.

Is it possible to get a rebuild kit for the current fuel pump? Please advise on where to purchase, if available.

If I end up buying a new pump will the new one be able to be rebuilt?

Our plans are to run this on a little Jon boat my son and I have had our eye on from a friend.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Solomon_Man. Some of these old fuel pumps aren't rebuildable, unfortunately. I checked iboats and didn't see it anywhere :/ However, you can try checking ebay, aomci.org, or here in the forums for a good used fuel pump that you can bolt right on. To test a fuel pump, you should be able to blow air into the intake only, suck air only out of the output only be able to suck and blow into the pulse line. You can even buy and after market mikuni, or Briggs & Stratton fuel pump and use it instead. Do a search for 2 line to single line conversions for examples. I believe the B&S pumps are only about $15 and install pretty easily with only slight modification. Of course, make sure the compression is decent in the motor before you do anything else, or dump too much money into it.

Re: 1960 Fisherman...fuel pump question...

Thanks for the information!

I will do the normal compression and once over before spending the cabbage on the parts....

I found the below pump (Mikuni-Genuine-Single-Fuel-DF44-211-D) mentioned on one of the other forum posts but for a speeditwin (18hp) conversion. Looks like its available at Amazon.

Will the above work?

I assume the fuel rate is more then enought as it handled the 18hp...Is it two much of a rate though or is that not a concern?

I am interested in looking at the Briggs fuel pump if anyone has the part number on hand.

Thanks,
Chris
