Hi Everyone,
I am freshing up a 1960 johnson 10hp. I completely rebuilt the carb with new float, new waterpump, all new ignition. I went to start it today and I got it started, but could not keep it running and it was hard to start. The spark is great on both cylinders. Compression is 70psi on both cylinders. carb is getting fuel, so I know fuel pump is working. Please help!!! Any suggestions appreciated.
thanks

Define great spark on both cylinders. Holding your plug to the block and having it spark does verify great spark, if that is what you are doing. Need an inline tester, set to 1/4", and have the spark jump that consistently with a bright blue ZAP!!

Have you tried spraying pre mixed fuel into cylinders, will that bump it?

Yes I do have a inline tester and does jump 1/4". Like I said I did get it starter, but I just can not seem to keep it running. runs for a few seconds then dies.

Geesh must have read right past the part that you stated that it will run for a few seconds, lol My mistake sorry.

Even without fuel pump, the motor will run on 30 seconds or so on the fuel in the carb bowl alone.

70 is a touch low, but should still run on that compression.

Did you torque flywheel nut? Taper clean and dry? Key not sheared? Needle settings? Linc n sync done? Backfiring at all, or just dying?

Hi Chris
Yes I did torque the flywheel nut. Taper is clean and dry. key is fine. Needle settings 1 1/2 out from seated low speed and 1turn out from seated high speed. What exactly are you calling a lync and sync?? not backfiring just dying. thanks

Syncronizes the throttle linkage to the ignition. The carb butterfly should just start to open when the roller meets the index mark on the throttle cam.

starting procedure...are you advancing the throttle as far as it will go in neutral, choke full on, before pulling the starter rope?...
