1960 Johnson 40 adjust timing help

I read a lot of threads about adjusting the timing on outboards, I have a 1960 Johnson SS 40 hp RDSL-22. How would I adjust the timing? Is it even possible on these motors? Also, does this motor have points or just magneto's?

It has points, condensors and magneto coils under the flywheel.

To sync the ignition to the carb you align the cam follower between the two marks on the cam when the throttle starts opening. Search on the forum under link and sync and you will find lots on it.

Thank you fo rthe info Steve, are the flywheels hard to get off? I don't have a manual (yet).

MANUAL: I just recieved a manual on a disk. It has plenty of information on JOHNSON "vintage" engines.. IT was on E-BAY...MANUALMAN60...
Well worth the money...

My question is on what the resistance of my primary and secondary windings of my coil need to be? 1961 75 HP

I dont know the resistance.

For the flywheel, get a harmonic balancer at a store (under $10 at Harbour freight I have heard) and 3 grade 8, 1/4" bolts and screw it on the top and tighten until it pops. It is harder on the 40's as the torque is so high on them... Search this forum for a better explanation of the procedure.
