1960 Johnson 40, RDS-22. I had the stator off, and now I can't figure out how to reconnect the spark advance link. When I advance the throttle, the carb opens fully, but the spark advance only goes about halfway...... its like something needs to put drag on the link (the one with the slot), or a spring is missing. If anyone has a diagram, man I'd appreciate it. Thanks

I'll take a picture, but I've got to charge the camera batteries first. Check back in 1 hr.

Thank you, Paul, that would be great. I can't get the stator to fully advance ,,,,, in other words, the stop on the stator won't travel as far as the boss on the top of the cylinder head.

Well, here's the link:

The bottom outside hole on the cam follower brass bits is for the interrupter on the pull starter. It prevents you from pull starting the outboard if you've got the throttle too far forward. If you need it too I can post that, but if you have no pull starter you do not have the link (and probably not as well if you do - these were often removed).

Can you rotate the armature plate by hand? Do you need a picture of the spring where the throttle arm links to the brass bar that moves the armature plate (stator)?

Thank you, Paual, you are a lifesaver. That big spring on the stator end is what I'm missing. If you;re ever in central NY, look me up,,,,, I owe you lunch!

Actually, looking closer, mine has no provision for that spring. I'll take a pic and maybe someone could tell me what Im doing wrong?

That spring needs to be there. Here's another pic:

It pushes the armature plate until it hits it's stop, then it compresses and the post on the throttle arm moves through the slot. While it's doing that, the linkage that runs from the throttle arm to the cam follower is supposed to take over, pushing the follower off the cam and opening the carburetor all the way.

Tried to take a pic, but my camera isnt as good as yours, and its too blurry. My actuator, from the linkage, does NOT have that second hole, towards the rear, so my link to the stator goes in the same hole as the pin comming from the carb. Im thinking I could rig a spring from the stator link to the engine block and have it accomplish the same thing. Thanks for the help.

Re: 1960 Johnson 40 spark advance hookup

You mean the large spring that is at the throttle arm end - not the cam follower end - is different? There's an earlier linkage system that I thought was gone by '60. Sorry about that.

It should be basically the same at the cam end, but at the throttle arm end the spring and slotted section of the link go up underneath the stator, and the round hole goes over the throttle arm (the part that runs up the side of the outboard). It connects to the bottom of the arm at the single pin through it, which also runs the 1/8" linkage with the set screw on it.

I'm afraid I do not have a decent picture of how this linkage is connected. I do have a couple exploded diagrams that give you the gist. Email me at paul.moir@gmail.com and I can send them, but it may be Sunday before I can.

I am trying to help a friend locate a VIN on his outboard. It is a 1960 Johnson Super Seahorse 40 HP. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

FastFive.... Go back to the previous page. At the top left you'll see "Create New Post". Click on that to enter you post which will then appear at the top of the listing. As it stands, you're pretty well buried under another members topic.

BTW.... At the center front portion of that 1960 40hp, there's a large plate just above the transom area. That plate has the model and serial number. Those would be the numbers you need.
