1960 johnson fd14 18 hp new shift bushing wont stay in

hello, New to the forum!! im looking for help understanding why my new shift rod bushing wont stay in? i ordered the correct one but im not sure whats going on. when i removed the original one it didnt take alot of force to remove but normal force. they are the same size. i guess i dont know if im applying enough force to the new one to get it to stay. any help would be great. tnx

Are you sure they are exactly the same size? If all else fails, put some blue Locktite on it.

im gonna measure the old one but im 99.999% sure. thanks for the tip
