How often does the grease in a '60 Merc 400 need to be changed? Does it follow the same guidelines as its fluid counterparts? Also when adding new grease will it force the old grease out of the vent hole or is it fluid enough to drain out of the fill hole?

Lastly I've read that the 400 takes about 1 1/4 tubes to fill the LU, is this correct?

I forgot to add that this is a gear shift model, and not direct reversing.

It calls for 105 lubriplate grease. Some have said 90 wt will work, but it already has the grease in it so that's what ill stick with.

Re: 1960 Merc LU

Im going to have to ask around in regards to flushing the LU. I know a lot of older direct drive outboards used grease, so there's got to be a process to doing it.

As far as your parts go, I'll keep you in mind as I start to dig deeper into this motor. One thing is for sure, someone at some point put some money into this thing. It seems to be in above average condition base on the research I've been doing. Some of the wires have been replaced by someone with skill, meaning heat shrink, proper gauge, and connectors. None of the wires are cracked or rotted, and she has new plugs and wires. I just hope she runs as good as she looks!
