Don't know for sure on that particular motor, but most any motor will start at 3/4 turn from lightly seated on the high speed and 1-1/2 turns on slow speed. Once started, adjust from there.

Should start and run as stated but both needles can be set at 3/4 turn out from gently seated.Should be adjusted warm in gear.If it refuses to operate you most likely need to rebuild the carb and possibly the fuel pump.

Ok
i rebuilt the fuel pump and cleaned the carb runs better:) but not right:confused:
it has a "carter model n carb"

Go through the carb again.Prove all passages and jets are clear.
Many times after a 2nd time through the carb they have success.
Disconnect line to carb ,carefully crank with line in a can.Should have a strong even pulse.

Re: 1960 scotts 12hp carb question

I have done these things and all is ok as far as clean and good pressure,
i think that it is the adjustment needle screws (2) that where very worn and grooved
i filed them back trying to maintain the form but i think that the seats are bad
i either want to rebuild this carb or replace it if someone can tell me of a model that will work in its place

i have found that it is a carter model n id # 3033s

You will be lucky if you can find a carb. Or a rebuild kit. You will probably have to settle for a used carb. Probably the best bet is go to aomci.org and post a free want ad on their Webvertize page.

Carter model N doesn't mean much. Maybe with the other ID. Model N was used on a raft of different motors, all modified for the particular application.

Did you take the main nozzle out of the carb? It sems to me that there is a teensy tiny hole in the side of it that plugs up over nothing. But I could be confusing it with another.

Also, I seem to remember that the slow speed needle is supposed to have a step on it. But again, I could be confusing it with another.

Re: 1960 scotts 12hp carb question

after more tear down of the carb i found that the high speed needle was not hitting the seat at all, when i measured everything it looks like the screw is about 1/4 inch to short so i get no adjustment at all from it.
i have talked to the "scottguy" and he is looking into his stock to see if he has it (i hope) if not i will have to try and find the specs and get a new one made.
