I have taken apart the fuel pump for my 5.5 H.P. 1961 Evinrude motor to see if there was a problem with the pump. I found out the problem was I ran 50:1 fuel mixture when I should have run 24:1 mixture. (I couldn't keep the motor running). Did I damage the motor possibly? Also, where can I find an exploded view of the pump so that I can put it together correctly?

outboardbooks.com OEM manual, and parts manual. check your compression. yes, you could have damaged the motor, depending on how long you ran it with 50:1.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully the motor isn't damaged. I took it out once after changing the gas in the tank and putting in the wrong fuel mixture. I couldn't keep the motor running, so I stored it for 4 years. There may have been another problem caused by the wrong fuel. thanks again.

I do not think your problem was caused by using 50:1 in a 24:1 outboard.

Go to the Top Secret file. Do "Awakening a sleeping outboard" and, if needed, "Outboard won't start".

Re: 1961 5.5 H.P. Evinrude

I hooked up the motor to new correct fuel mixture, pumped the ball until I got gas in the fuel bowl, pulled the choke, and yanked the cord. She started up & purred for 3-4 seconds & died. I repeated this process 4-5 times. I took apart the fuel pump and noticed only one spring where it looks like it's suppose to have 2. My (new) shop manual does not have an exploded view of my fuel pump. Can someone send me one, or do I need a better manual? Do I need 2 springs in the pump? Help! opener for fishing season starts next week! It looks like a simple vacuum actuated pump with no tears or damage. There are only eight parts (metal & gaskets) including the single spring.

It should run more than 3-4 seconds even without a fuel pump. The carburetor holds more gas than that. You have another problem besides the pump.

Thanks for the exploded view of the fuel pump that was sent. This type of diagram is exactly what I'm looking for. I don't think it's the right fuel pump though. Not counting my single spring, all my pump's parts, except one, are all rectangular. The 2 metal pieces, the plastic piece, and the diaphram are all 1 1/2 inches on a side. Then I have 3 other inner gaskets plus a 3 1/2 inch by 2 1/2 inch (rectangular shaped) gasket which fits between the fuel pump and the carb. Mine has no needle valves in the side, and the parts (other than the one) are not rectangular in shape like the parts in the exploded view diagram I received . Mine is off a 5.5 H.P. motor (1961). Thanks, again for the help! I'm on the right track.
