Only my second post, and a complete outboard tinkering novice, so please bear with me!

Assuming I can get my 40+ year old engine purring like a kitten (topic of previous post!), the next challenge I will have is sticking it on my 15ft cabin fishing boat.

The (rather old) boat has a wire cable steering system rig on it so steering isn't the problem, but I was wondering is it possible to connect up a remote gear shift and throttle type unit to control this kind of motor?

Or will I have to rely on running backwards and forwards between the steering wheel and the engine if I want to steer up front rather than using the tiller arm!?

Any thoughts or "idiot's guide" type websites I can look at that may show me what I need to do?

Cheers
Schmooser

This engine, with the proper hardware, can be shifted, and throttle controlled with the proper set-up. You will have to work with a dealer, with his assessory catalog for the proper set-up.

Hello schmooser.
You should be able to find all the hardware you need on ebay.
As far as an outboard engine guide for dummies goes,do not under estimate yourself! You should get a hold of the "Seloc Volume One" (available through this board-look in the left bottom of this page). It is for 2 cylinder outboard engines from 2 till 40 horse.Your engine is shown in there and everything you need to learn about it is written there too.It takes you by the hand and leads you in outboard land.(How is that for schmoosing?)
As for your name,is that part of a language your grand parents used to speak?

Look for controls setups from the 1960s. You want some engine connectors on the end of the control cables that are unique to that period. It's the connectors themselves that are a bit hard to find. They'll fit newer cables.

Don't kill yourself fixing up that particular 51/2, despite what your Dad may feel for it. They are worth around 25-250 here (US dollars), wreck to perfect, and there are LOTs of them around. The best years, IMHO, are early 1960s to around 1974 when they started to get into solid state ignitions. Also, up to around 33hp I'd expect the price to be around the same, so no need to stick with the 5.5 on that 15 footer.
