1961 evinrude 40hp lark 3 clicks in forword but not reverse

i have a 1961 evinrude lark 3 motor goes into reverse fine but when you shift to forword gear it clicks it is a cable shift if i take the cable off and hold down on the lever it will go into forword gear but as soon as i let go it starts to click can anyone help please

Sounds like your clutch dog is damaged, do you have any metal in your lower unit oil?

no i just changed the gear lube and found no shaveing in it. i also saw that the arm that the shift arm is conected to is what makes a clicking noise becouse it looks like it does not go all the way into gear

When you changed the gear lube you didn' t remove the phillips head screw did you?

no i did not i just removed the flat headed screw

Remove the oval cover on the side of the leg and check the shift rod coupler. Make sure both the upper and lower shift rods are properly seated in the coupler and the bolts holding them are tight.
