Is this what I would need to diagnose and repair the problems with this engine? $29.71 - Johnson & Evinrude, 1.5-40hp, 2 Stroke Models, 1956-70 reapir manual

I took it to a mechanic and he said it would cost more to fix it than it was worth. Supposedly it has a scratched head(?).

Model year coverage is correct for the manual. Got a picture of the
"scratched" head?

Huh?... A scratched head??? You mean a cracked head? Still easy to fix, just find another one and bolt it on... If the block is cracked you're toast though!

I use that seloc manual and it's not bad... it'll get you started...

The mechanics at my local OMC/BRP dealer wont work on anything older than mid 70's so they might have no idea what's wrong with it or how much to fix... Used parts for the old 40's are a dime a dozen... I have 4 of those engines kicking around... One of these years I'll start testing them!

Re: 1961 evinrude lark 3 40hp

here is the link to the motor I was talking about. Do ya'll see anything obvious?
Looks like it's been sitting for quit awhile. Needs to be taken apart and gone through though.

Is this the original lower unit? Is this a short shaft?
Looks right. Does it fit the boat?

thank ya'll for your excellent reponses so far. I was gonna just put a new motor on.
Does "new motor" = powerhead or a complete unit?

I wish those pics had been turned vertical before posting! Hard to look at. And I agree, it looks like it's sat for awhile.

Did you take the compression before pulling the head? Does it spin freely?

????What's with the top cylinder? It looks like the head is the least of your worries. Looks like a possible trash motor from here.

You are right I do need to go through it. Once I get the manual I plan on doing that.

Yes it spins freely. That is not a crack, thankfully, just a stain.

The top cylinder has like salt crystals on it. they wipe right off. But that is when it stopped running the day after I took it out in the creeks near Myrtle Beach. The water pump hose had a leak in it from rubbing against the flywheel and it would blow water all over the engine. I am afraid it sucked salt water into the engine. That was in august and it hasn't run since then.

Can I just reattach the head and do a compression test?

It did spark when I was having it looked at back in august.

Thanks

John

If it ingested salt water back in August, ugh. But since it still turns over it might not be as bad as it could be....if you are lucky. Remove the intake bypass covers from the side of the cylinders and use a flashlight to peer back into the crankcase. If you see any signs of rust on the crank or rods, it needs a complete teardown for further inspection. With the covers off, you can also see the piston rings and see if they are stuck in the grooves.

A compression test in it's present condition would be pretty meaningless.

Thanks so much for your reponses!!!

In order to do this

"Remove the intake bypass covers from the side of the cylinders and use a flashlight to peer back into the crankcase. If you see any signs of rust on the crank or rods, it needs a complete teardown for further inspection. With the covers off, you can also see the piston rings and see if they are stuck in the grooves."

I want to have the manual first. I don't even know what an intake bypass cover is.:)

So do I need the owners manual, the service manual and the parts manual?

It ingested salt water in August? Ugo... that could be a major issue... Get it running asap and put extra oil in the first few tanks... Hope it's ok inside.
