Model is 1961 10 HP johnson QD-22. I resealed the lower unit and replaced the impeller. Engine starts but now where I think is the water discharge the water is not coming out as fast as it used to..

There is a hold to the right of the shift access panel.

How much water should this be pushing out?

The water indicator is the big finger-sized hole in the rear of the midsection, about half way down to the water level. Water should blow out that hole as a healthy spray, along with some exhaust. However, most of the water and exhaust goes out the big opening aft of the propeller.

I think you are looking a a pencil-sized hole near the lower mounts, right? That is a drain hole for water that excapes around the drive shaft hole in the pump housing. You have less water coming out there because you put in a new impeller and it is sealing better and less water is escaping. That is a good thing, Less is better. But not zero.

Yes the pencil sized hole is what I was referring to.

The spray you refer to is along with the exhaust hole on the back side of the engine, above the waterline.

How do I tell if the water pump is working?

If there is no spray coming out, then what? New impeller.

Should I take the water pump apart and reassemble again, but not tighten the screws so tight?

You tell by whether or not spray is coming out. If it is not, then there is something wrong.

You might have put it together wrong.
It might be plugged up.
You might have it in a bucket (not deep enough in the water) Yes??
If none of the above, yes you have to take it apart till you find the trouble.
NO, do not leave the screws loose!

Tub with water 1/2 up the leg.
Water should come out immediately on start.
Possible - old impeller pieces blocking tubes? was it broken apart?
Possible - impeller pin missing. impeller will slip on drive shaft and not pump.

Impeller installed with fins bent in wrong direction? Should still pump. Just won't last long.

Re: 1961 hp water discharge

I pulled the lower unit this morning and this is what I did:

Put a tube on the water tube inside the shaft and turned on the water. Water came out the exhaust hole on the back in a steady stream.

Pulled the water pump off, checked the water tube intake bushing, clear.
Checked the intake where water comes in with air can, clear.

Put impeller back on and as I lowered the cover made sure the impeller was turning.

I was turning the drive shaft clockwise. Is that correct?

Put back together, still get water out of pencil hole, no spray from exhaust.

Plenty of water in the can, up to the lower mounts.

When the engine worked in the fall, spray came out fine. The only difference is the new impeller. I got it from a Johnson dealer, but unfortunately tossed the old one so cannot compare sizes.

Any ideas?

sailorman...did u get ur problem solved?
I am having the same issue on a 62 25hp gale (OMC).
I am gonna drop the lower unit and make sure the copper tube mated up good with the waterpump housing as I installed.
