Hey Folks,

Well I have the 9.5 Evinrude how I like it so now I am on to a new project. I bought a 5.5 for 75 bucks.

My first question is can someone settle the fuel to oil mix ratio needed this particular motor has had a 50:1 I have read 24:1 so what is it?

Secondly I want to do some more cosmetic type stuff this one. Repaint, Decal that sort of thing...any input there?

Thirdly what is the best plug for this one?

For any of you that are in there 50's like me there is a movie out from our child hood with Don Knotts called "The incredible Mr Limpet" its in color and like 5 bucks at Walmart. In the Menu section they show all the stars of the movie doing a preview type thing at the Weeki Watchee Springs here in Florida where I live.

The cool thing is and the reason I mention it is because when the cast is at the docks there is some awesome shots of the old 1960's era Johnson motors at the docks behind them on the fishing skiffs.

Love this forum and all the help you all are the best.

The service manual calls for a Fuel/Oil Ratio of 24:1.

So the question begs to be asked...what if this motor was run at a 50/1 ratio? What in your alls estimation damage could of been done?

Joel,
I can't answer your question, but many of us have acquired "new to me" outboards, and have no idea how well they were cared for. All you can do is what's best going forward.

Re: 1961 Johnson 5.5 CD-18

running too lean a mix of oil in the fuel could cause excess friction in the cylinders. it could cause scoring on the walls of the cylinders, which could decrease their efficiency. lack of oil could also damage bearings on the inside of the motor. worse case scenario, would be total seizure of the motor due to lack of lubrication of the internal parts. at that point you'd prorably want to look for a new $75 motor.
Otherwise, everyone else is correct. Champion J6C plugs, 24:1 fuel mix, nymarine.net is also a great source for paint/decal info. however, they can be kind of expensive. ok they can be REALLY expensive, so be warned :/ several of the folks here have gone to their local sign printing shops who were able to make identical/correct decals for a much cheaper price. you can also find decals on sites like ebay, but they usually don't have decals for super old motors, but it might be worth a look. just a sugestion. I just repainted the cowl of my '61 10 hp with some spray paint and primer. it turned out pretty good. Not worlclass or anything, but much better than before. lots of posts here on how to paint outboards too. Good luck! Keep us posted. We like pics too.
