I have installed new points, coil, and rings and it runs. Now to check out the rest. Does the wobbler or impeller need to be replaced? are they made out of rubber? F_R provided me with a parts breakdown which is great, thanks. It shows a propeller clutch. Is this an actual clutch? meaning does it engage at increased rpms? or is it just a safety like shear pin? Depending on winter storm coming later this week so don't know when I will be able to tear it down. I like the looks of this motor so if it is dependable I may make it my main motor for my 12' jon. Any help is always appreciated and I like to add new topics from time to time for my own entertainment.

Re: 1961 sea king/gale 3d17 questions

The wobbler or impeller is properly called a "rotor". Oil or grease leaking out of the gearcase gets on them , making them swell up and no longer work. A visual inspecton should tell the tale if it is good or bad. It should be a snug fit on the brass eccentric in the center and just touching the inside of the housing at some point. There should be approx 1/8" space between the rotor and housing on the other side of the rotor. It should be the same height as the depth of the housing, not jammed in there tight. The projection on the rotor should be a reasonable fit in the housing. If you watch that space as you slowly crank the motor, you will see it appear at the intake side of the housing and progress around to the outlet on the other side, where it disappears only to appear again at the intake side. That space is what takes in a gulp of water and moves it around to the other side.

The "clutch" is a slip clutch. If you hit a submerged object, the rubber is supposed to jump over one notch on the hub and grab hold again. That (usually) prevents shearing a pin. The pin is supposed to be stainless steel to prevent unnecessary shearing.
