After installing new impeller and prop shaft seal I still get some water in the gear case. I did not use any gasket sealer so that may be why. the drive shaft has a groove in it and I thought I would build up that area with some epoxy and sand smooth. I think that the bushing nut maybe worn or that seal below it might be shot. It looks like a difficult repair, is it? is that seal just a regular type oil seal? or is it more like packing material? Also someone told me to use grease in the gearcase not gear oil. any thought or advice would be great.

Has your gear case drain/fill plug a new gasket under it? The most common cause of water intrusion into the gear case is poor sealing of the plug(s). Those washer-like gaskets are for one use only.

Do not put anything in the gearcase except what the maker recommends.

It takes outboard gear grease, no longer made. Most people use Lubriplate 105, sold by NAPA Autp Parts as "Motor Assembly Grease". Others use "Corn Head Grease", sold by John Deere Tractors dealers.

Those gearcases leaked a bit when brand new. It is a way it was designed (not on purpose). As they wear they leak worse. Yours obviously is worn. In addition to the prop shaft seal forward of the pump, there is another seal on the vertical drive shaft.

You have two choices, a complete rebuilding of the gearcase and correct the engineering error while you are at it, or just keep putting grease in it and flushing out the old grease and water as you do.

You're the Man, Frank! will check out the 2 lubes you named. I don't think I can find a new bushing and seal. will try to build up that shaft. I have to take that motor apart again anyway because I know I didn't stake the rod bolts, just got them real tight. I made an extra cylinder gasket when I made the first one.

My old school scott-attwater always got water in it,even after new seals/bushings as good as I could get it.. After every outing, just drained and flushed with new gear oil, no problems! A bit of a hassle if you don't like messing around but hey,ya got an old unit just deal with it.
It was still running strong when I gave it away, and still good 5 years later, thats the last I seen of it since I moved away....
