I have acquired a 1962 Johnson HP. My uncle said it has been in the garage for at least 6 years. I replaced all the fuel lines, grease, carb/clean, lube and spark plugs and it cranked up on the second pull.

I do have a problem with the footer. There seems to be a small hole just above the propeller that is leaking small amounts of grease/gray and black. The hole is no bigger that a large needle.

Questions:

Does this hole belong there? If so, why is there grease leaking out of it?

If you know where I can get parts/books on this motor it would be greatly appreciated.

Please email with the info at aruud@lsqgroup.com.

Thank you,

For reproductions of the factory manuals and parts catalogs contact the Ken Cook Company. Go here to find the manual(s) you want - http://www.kencook.com/kccwww/marinepubs/oml12.html - Then scroll to the top of the page and click on "how to order".

Is the grease leak from the actual gearcase or is it exhaust residue? The gearcase can be pressure tested if need be.

-John

is this hole in front or in back of the prop? its quite possible that is part of the exhaust system and because it is a two stroke it does extrude oil with the exhaust, if you can give me a little more descriptioni might be able to help more :)

Thanks for the info on manuals!

The hole is behind the propeller on the underneath side of bottom flat fin. It is about a 1.2 inch from the center. The exhaust is just above the flat fin in the center and it does have signs of oil (not grease). The whole does go up into the gear case. It is not a crack. It looks like it was designed to be there.

Alan

If the hole is designed to be there, should I take it apart and see if I can replace the seal inside that is leaking the gear grease, or just keep an eye on the gear grease level. I only plan on using it once a week.

I take it at as a judgement call , whatever you are comfortable with. I personally feel that a leak will only get worst not better and murphy's law always comes to mind when I put things off :)
