All,

I have the opportunity to pick up a 1962 Merc 6HP White Model with the original tank. Motor has good compression but probably will need to be gone through. Have not seen run. The usual story.

Are the impellers on these engines hard to change out? Any other "gotchas" to look out for on these early engines with some of the parts requiring a bag of special tools to replace?

If any of you have experience with these, I'll look forward to your response. I want a vintage outboard to use 1-2 weeks out of the year on a fishing trip.

I just retired our Ted Williams 1974 7.5HP but want to stick with something older.

Anyone have one of these engines before I dive into the deep unknown and have the opportunity to purchase a very expensive paperweight?

If you want a vintage motor that is easy to work on, for just a week or two a year, I'd stay clear of those early Mercury's, they are not the easiest to work on, and may need special tools. If I were you, I'd find a Johnson/Evinrude from 1959 and up that don't use a pressure tank. They are easy to work on and very reliable.

You don't need any special tools to replace the impeller. If the lower needs a new seal kit you will need a tool. They are nice one-pull-start motors when they are tuned right. Go for it if you can get a good price. If it's white it's 62, black is 1963. Don't buy a 60-61 because they have a complicated transmission that is expensive to fix.

Thanks for the information. It's a white 1962. I'll be going over to give it a look this week.

I've never experienced a 1 pull-start motor since I've been running the 5-15 pull 1974 Ted Williams "Blistermaker" since it was new in 1974..

It looks like this company reproduces the Mercury tools:

Which specific tool is needed?

You don't need any of those for the impeller. You will have to replace the lower seals if water is getting into the gear lube, and you will need what he has listed as:
"Gearcase cover removal tool, Small gearcase motors 3.9,4.0,6.0,7.5,9.8 (110) Years 1962 thru 1985". The seal kits and that tool can be bought at a lot of different sites.

Thanks for pointing out his site. I didn't have that one in my favorites :D

I have the white 62 and have done some work on it. I know this is an old forum, but did you still have any questions?

I ended up passing on the Merc 60 and have since bought and fixed a KF5, KE4, 2 Mark 25's and a 1967 Merc 110.

Hi! I'm glad I stumbled onto this thread! I do have a 62 White 6hp Merc. I just got my hands on it today. It was my grandfathers and has not been run in probably 20-30+ years. I know it was used very little and everything appears to be in great shape. I'm happy to hear this might be a nice little 1 pull motor!!
Where do I start with this thing?? What should I look for before trying to run it?
