I have had this outboard for a while took me forever to find the right impeller for it. Thought it was an 18 when I first saw that beautiful distinctive hood, had never saw a 10 hp. Anyway. I cannot get this lower unit on. First I tried with the lower unit up high somewhat above the motor on the bracket. I have tried the motor down on the ground and pounding the LU with a large heavy plastic hammer. I have got many of the 60's/70's 15 tp 40 hp OMC LU's on in the past. Some were a royal pain, but so far this one has me stumped the most. What the ell is wrong? Is there some trick I'm missing???

Are you turning flywheel when trying to align driveshaft splines?

I am aghast that an experienced outboard person would resort to a hammer to install a lower unit !

Have done it many times Race1 as a last resort. IF those LU's survive some of the shocks they receive hitting sandbars, and rocks, I don;t think a plastic hammer used judiciously will hurt them. Yes, have tried turning flywheel til it hurts. The LU just will not go on the last inch. Greased spline and other logical things you are suppose to do. I have put on many 6 hp LU's I just don;t get it. Could the engine and/or the female spline socket be off center?
