I'm trying to get my motor to fire and so far I've gotten nothing from it. I've rewired the boat and it had new coils, points and condensers installed 15 years ago with only a few times on the water and was last started 5 years ago. I had to replace the solenoid with one for a ford both are 4 terminal. Everything is hooked up like its suppose to be except I disconnected the white wire that goes from motor to solenoid as it was making a weird noise as the terminal from the solenoid is hot when the switch is turned on. The engine rotates but wont even sputter. The key switch looks like its seen better days is there a way I can bypass the switch to rule it out while still being able to turn motor over.

Install a FACTORY solenoid.----They used the same solenoid for about 40 years on all electric start Evinrude / Johnson models.----It means they are good and safe to use.-----A fire out on the lake might spoil your day !!

From what I recall, those Ford solenoids look the same but don't work for marine application.

Nothing to do with " marine "------The factory solenoid ground lead goes through the safety switch to ground.----The FORD coil may go to ground through it's own mounting bracket.------Get the factory solenoid to be safe.

It ended up being the solenoid. I switched it with other one and it started up. Only thing is I have to keep negative off battery or starter will keep spinning.

You have it wired up wrong.----Or perhaps the wrong ignition switch.----Hopefully you have not put 12 volts to your ignition coils.-------Fact----Wiring and 12 volts are very easy but much mis-understood.
