1962 Evinrude LU question w pics

Model 10024r Sportwin 10 hp In the pics below the area circled in white is that hole supposed to be there? After I run the motor in a barrel and drain the barrel, water 1st then grey milky stuff comes out then some black as shown in the 2nd pic. Im thinking I might need some new seals maybe? Thanks for any help

I can't really tell by the picture what you are talking about. Are you getting water in your lower unit? Sometimes running an engine in a barrel you will get oily residue on the water, especially if your oil/gas mixture is a little rich.

It is hard to tell in that photo. There are some drain holes in the LU where the water in the pump housing drains from when it is removed from the water. That's normal. Cant tell from your photo. But look at the holes. If they are machined then chances are it's the normal drain holes and all's ok.

I figured the photo out and it is perfectly normal. You put oil in the gas. Every drop of that oil goes through the engine as it runs. Some is burned (smoke) and the rest goes on through the engine and out the exhaust. The portion that goes out the exhaust winds up in the barrel, making that scum that is freaking you out. Remove the motor from the water and the scum drains out the exhaust and other drain holes. It is much less obvious if you get it out of that barrel and onto a boat where it was designed to run.
