OK....my push button shift switch is TRASHED, I have not had any luck locating a new one, I'm thinking of using some marine grade switches with covers to protect from accidently shifting into reverse, or neutral at high speeds etc. what should the Amp rating be on the switches I use, I'm finding a lot of 12v 5amp switches will these work??

Yes it will.-----------Make sure you can not apply 12 volts to both forward and reverse at the same time.

this may have already happened, while I was trying to repair the switch, I noticed that the prop would not turn in either direction, the motor was not running at the time, so I unhooked the switch and noticed that the fiber plates that move around when a button is pushed were all busted up, that's how I got to this point, is ther a chance I screwed something else up in the process??

Test at the motor with just one jumper wire.---Apply 12 volts to the green wire and see if prop will turn one way and lock up the other way.----Repeat with the blue wire.

If the engine is not running, no harm will occur if both forward and reversed are engaged. With the engine running, it may be a different story

Technically, what you are looking for is a 3 position SPDT switch. (Single Pole, Double Throw with Off in center position. Yes, On-Off-On)
