1962 Johnson rx-10 c questions

First off i'd like to say I am a Marine newb. I do not know much of anything on boats per say but I've been working on engines, cars, trucks, small engines, and ATV's for 30+ years. I recently inherited my late boss's Caravelle Baracuda 4 ( 1975 ) and on it were 2 engines, a 1994 mercury 9.9 and this Johnson rx-10 c 28 hp. I cleaned the mercury up pretty easy and it is running great and i'm moving my attention to the Johnson now. Looking at this I see it has a starter ring for electric start but no starter, also notice it does not seem to have a charging circuit. I was hoping to get a starter and make it all work as pull starting is taking a toll on my neck and back. I did get a 1962 parts catalog for this engine to see what all is there or not there. and to my surprise I found nothing in it about a electric start or charging setup. Sooo is there one available for this old engine?
My next question is is there any tips on checking the points, condensers, timing, coils ect to get it ready to fire up? things I should note while i'm going through this engine? I know that is a wide range question, but people who have had past experiences with common issues, ect might give me a heads up before i have to find out in all the wrong areas.
in any rate thank you for reading and any input that is helpful.

I have a 1963 28hp evinrude and it has a ring gear and an electric starter bracket.. But no starter,, It may be that electric start was optional for these motors. And I think there is no charging system.. As far as coils if original they are probably cracked and scrap...Points and condensers are cheap.. But not always need replaced..

ARCO in Florida would be a good source for a starter. Also, post a free ad on aomci.org and see what turns up. You can do a simple push-button harness to get it up and running. That was the era of optional generator kits, but none for the 28 hp., which is really no issue.

Started today with putting it in a 55 gallon drum and filling it 3/4 full. pulled the plugs out and the plug wires themself look pretty ratty. seen some rub spots in several place that could cause shorting out. I did pull it over and do a compression test and ended up with 110 on the top cyl and 115 on the bottom so i'm happy with that. tried to verify spark and there was none on either cylinder. at that point I had to stop as we had a thunderstorm move in and start to downpour. No I did not bring it inside to work on unfortunately. just covered it up and came home.

I did find a starter on Ebay for around $55 new and says it fits this engine. I have not found the price yet on coil packs, points and condensers. I'm just wondering since mid to larger size engines are fairly cheap here if i shouldnt bother with such a old engine? I can find running 50-85 hp ones around $500 with controls... decisions decisions. Anyone own one of these? are they decent or problematic engines to keep running?

So today I took the flywheel off to look at the coils and points and found some issues. the coils have a metal tab running through them and is bent over on each end to keep the coil part from sliding around into the flywheel, well this tab on both coils is bent and had been rubbing on the inner hub of the flywheel, and it looks like the ends of the coils were also rubbing on the inner part of the flywheel, ( hitting the magnets ).

I did not check the coils yet to see if they are any good. Is there a proper testing for the coils? ohms test?

Points looked like 1 set was still new, no burnt marks or carbon and the other set looked like they were burnt at one point and had white crust from maybe years of sitting or oxidizing.

Above post has a pic of a coil and mounting boss -- has to be perfectly flush. Your coils appear to have been replaced (i.e., not originals), so probably OK. I would do the magneto assembly first. If you need to replace wires, use 7mm wire core wires, either solid or wound core. The tab you refer to is not an issue.

Google up some magneto pics
