So today I got new coils, points condensers for the old girl and put it all in. set the points and made sure nothing was interfering for the flywheel. I took the bowl off the carb to be sure there wasn't any layers of varnish since this engine has sat for countless years and to my surprise it has a cork float and that the bottom of the bowl was clean. like someone drained it before letting it sit. in any rate, I primed up the gas into the fuel pump and into the carb. choked it 1 time and pulled it over. it fired up and flooded. so took the choke off and pulled it over and it started right up. did not notice it was already in forward gear and it began to really shoot the water out of my water barrel. I put it quickly back into neutral and noticed the water pump was doing its job. it did blow out some debris like maybe a mouse somehow nested in there but quickly cleared out.

So as it was running I noticed it had a misfire as it ran... I tried to see which cyl was doing it by unhooking the plug wire off each one. of course one at a time. both cyl were running and firing fine however it would go into a mode where it sounded like it was running on 1 cyl then back fire once in a while. I'm thinking that there is something slightly clogged perhaps in the carb still that is causing it to run so poorly.
I do have a ( Parts ) OEM manual for this engine and just looking at the intake section of it, there is a ( Leaf blade ) which I am not sure what the function of it is.. is that like the early versions before reed valve induction? perhaps it is sticking or stuck causing a issue?

I wanted to take the carb off and go through it completely but I am a little unsure of the jet presets for adjustments and wanted to know if anyone had a factory service manual that could send me pictures or a link to the factory tune up procedure?

On a side note the previous own has 2 different plugs in this engine and so I'd like to replace them with the correct set if anyone can tell me the proper plug and gap for them.

if ya can help , thanks for any information.

Sparkplugs are J6C-------Lower jet is 1 turn out.----Upper ( low speed ) is 1-1/2 out.----Motor will start and keep running with those settings.------You must fine tune on the boat after that.

So today I did the adjustments and plugs. the engine fires right up but it's still pretty rough. I adjusted the bottom jet ( one that goes into the carb bowl ) to 1 turn out from soft stop. and then turned it in very slowly the engine picked up speed and then it make a soft backfire, so i backed it off 1/8 turn and it was running better.

I needed to do the adjustment to the carb/timing sync.. I have just kinda of eyeballed it in. I did line up the mark on the brass plate to the triangle shaped thing.. ( sorry I am new to the terminology ). then i loosened the brass plate on the linkage end on the carb and turned the nylon cam that the linkages goes through until the slack was gone. I believe that is the correct setting. there is no tach connection on this engine and so I am not sure what the idle speed is set to or should be set to for proper adjustment. can anyone verify that is sync is the right way to set it?
