Hi Guys

Just wondering something about a lil Merc 1962, 60 6hp I had donated to me. I'm sure there are a few of you who know this engine quite well. Anyway, should it have enough "umph" to plane an 8 foot fiberglass dingy with a 220 lb person (me) in it?

I would think it should easily. I've replaced the points/condensers and gapped points to .020, new plugs as well. Both cylinders have loads of spark. Actually it purrs like a kitten when idling along and revs up real good but seems to be lacking that extra high end to push onto plane when at WOT. The prop is in good shape too.

Compression on both cylinders is around 90lbs.

Most dinghys are round bottomed and not really designed to plane there more of a displacement type hull. Depending on the bottom design you might not plane it with a 15HP engine

Thanks for the reply Laddies

I hear you about the hull design. I just figure the 6 should be enough to get it up on top. I've had a 7.5 on the same hull and it goes like a bat outta hell. Also an old 3hp twin seahorse which seemed to come close to what the 6 puts out.

Can't complain though it does run like a charm now that I've tuned it up. The young lad has a great lil engine to learn with. :)

Thanks again...
