I fired up my Merc 1000 100hp on muffs for the first time yesterday. At idle and low off-idle throttle settings, no water came out of the telltale, but a good amount of water came out from the center of the prop, along with the exhaust. What could be causing this? Is water supposed to exit the thru-prop exhaust outlet? The powerhead did not get hot in a brief <1min run, just warm to the touch. I could keep hand on the cylindar indefinitely.
I plan on replacing the drive/prop/shift shaft seals and the water pump impeller/gaskets.

Thanks in advance.

bh 357: Might check closely to see if bees filled the hole-- try combos of small, soft wires. It's not a straight run. Best not blow anything into the hole. If it breaks lose, then it's still in there, waiting to plug something up. This lack of flow alone is not reason to do all the seal repairs you mention. Sounds like your pump is working fine. I can't get muffs to work on mine. :D

Thanks for the reply NEECAPRS. I'll check the telltale for nests, etc... Is it normal for water to flow out from the center of the prop? This is a thru-prop exhaust.

When the water was turned on, but the motor was not running, a lot of water shot out from between the muffs and the lower unit. Once the motor started, much less water seemed to escape from between the muffs and the lower unit, leading me to believe that water was being drawn into the motor.

Yep, water from the exhaust is normal. With luck, your only problem is a little plug in the tell-tale.

Small pieces of the impeller will tend to break off in time. Sometimes it will break off in sizes where it will not completely blow out the tail tell. It will get stuck in either the water line going through the pump, or somewhere in the tail tell itself.
So far in the last 3 years, I have had that problem twice.
