I notice that the cam follower on my 1963 18hp Evinrude has some pretty deep ruts in it. I assume this is from wear and will result in poor throttle performance. Its cheap so I think I'll replace it but I'm afraid of ... if it aint broke dont fix it.

Question: Is the cam follower suppose to be smooth?

You mean the metal piece that screws onto the underneath of the ignition plate? And the carb throttle runs on it? I have never seen one worn. Huh.

Yes, it's supposed to be smooth.

203362 Cam Follower Roller. Made of hard rubber. Yes, they get wear grooves in them. So just replace it already. You won't hurt it by doing that.

Simply slide the E-ring that retains it off sideways out of the groove, lift the roller up and off, separate the roller from the plastic ends, reassemble with a new roller in reverse order. Don't drop the E-ring in the grass. Just kidding.

I do mean the rubber cam follower roller. I didnt want to try to replace it if it was suppose to have grooves or ruts in it for some strange reason that is beyond me. But I had a feeling it didnt look right. So I am ordering a new one. Replacement looks pretty simple. Thanks for the help.
