First time post, thanks for your help in advance.
I just bought a 5.5 1963 Johnson from the side of the road this morning cd-20r, don't worry only paid $30 for it. The guy I bought it from says it will run, but as of right now it won't even pull. I took the pull system (sorry for my ignorance on the correct name) off the top of the motor and it seems to be working, however the flywheel will not budge! Any ideas? (I called a mechanic and he told me to throw it in the garbage and I'm not ready for that). Thanks, Mike

Remove plugs and set motor with plug holes facing up. Spray in some penetrating oil and let soak at least 24 hours. See if that frees it up. If not, let it soak some more. Rings are probably stuck.

Thanks for the quick response! Excuse my ignorance, but what specifically should I use as a "penetrating oil"? I have Wd-40 and liquid wrench in the cabinet.

Pull it apart. ANY engine that is stuck needs to be disassembled to properly fix the issue, or at the very least, determine if it's a waste of time to put more time into it. Those 5.5s are dirt simple and among the easiest motors to work on. Right now you have a motor that doesn't run. Pulling it apart won't change that...

Might be worth at least popping the power-head off the midsection to isolate it from the lower unit. If the motor spins over when removed from the midsection, something's up in the lower unit. If the motor still refuses to budge, take it apart. Start by removing the head, and transfer port covers.
