How does one go about opening up the distributer to check the condensor as well as the coil? im not getting any spark out of it and want to check the components inside.

I need to know how to get to the points so I can clean em and I dont think the rotor comes off the main shaft

Re: 1963 650 distributer

as well as this info that i need, does the wires from the stator go up to the ignition, then get switched on , then go straight back to the coil to energize the ignition system? Is there anyway to bypass this? like apply 12 volts directly to the coil? I really need some anwers but mostly on how to take the housing apart that hides the coil,points,condensor..

It's not a distributor, per se, it's a self-contained magneto. It is held in place by four bolts, located at the flange between the support tower and the magneto. Remove those, plus any other bolts that may be holding linkages in place on the magneto itself. The mag will drop down an inch or so. It has a splined shaft with one flat side on it to facilitate realignment. The support tower has a small notch in the receiver coupling's flat side to help you realign things. Remove the plug wires from their respective plugs and any related wire holders from the block. Remove the bottom most cap (two screws) from the magneto, revealing the rotor. Pull the rotor off. Remove the main cap (four screws), keeping track of which one has the ground strap (for later reassembly).

Check for cracks in the coil. If there are no cracks, they're usually good to go.

You can bench test them while still disassembled by holding the main body of the mag against a bench vice, car bumper, etc. and supporting the coil tang about 3/4-inch from the vice. Spin the mag over (Clockwise, looking down) and you should get a good spark. You can test further once the mag is assembled by putting the spark plugs in the vice and holding the mag body against the vice, again spinning it over clockwise.

Re: 1963 650 distributer

somewhere I heard that the Rotor is permanently attached and i'm having really trouble pulling the rotor off the shaft. The second problem I have is that the ground strap wasn't attached to the main cap so i'm not sure where it belongs either... Is there a trick to removing the rotor? iv'e tried everything short of prying on it but i'm not about to do that as 48 year old plastic looks a lil brittle, lol. If the ground wire was missing from the CORRECT spot would this cause a no spark issue? Thanks for your reply

Re: 1963 650 distributer

Ok, So first off Thanks allot with the help testing this, seems to work and puts out a nice spark spinning it either direction, I have a wiring diagram for the engine (wiring is messed up from previous owner) and it shows the wires from the stator going to the rectifier then to the ignition switch (key). Does this wire going to the key then get switched on and give power to this self contained magneto or does just grounding it shut it off? Ive done some searching but havent found anything about this...the diagram doesnt show what gets grounded and what gets power when switched on

The wire that goes to the switch from the rectifier carries charging current, the only way to stop the motor is to ground the magneto so there must be a wire that runs from the switch to the magneto my manual says white, and to ground.
You can route the wire from the rectifier to the positive terminal on the motor, this prevents damage if the motor is shut-off at hi-rpms.
