Motor in signature with battery-distributor ignition. Tach reads signal from ignition coil. What should the setting on the back of the tach be at? If the brand makes a difference, I'll find out tomorrow what it is. Thanks.
You will need a stern-drive or automotive based tachometer set to 8 cylinders to read correctly. Modern outboard tachs use the alternator pulses, not ignition "firings", to determine rpm.
Okay, but why set to 8? Is that because there are twice the number of firings per given revolutions in a two stroke vs. a four stroke? Or is it something more complicated than that?
