I just bought a 1963 twin cyl. Evinrude -- IBoats says this is a 24/1 oil / fuel mix. The motor verifies that on a sticker, so this one must have the older bronze bearings in it. Good compression, a superb motor of its type.

Question is -- Is there a better type of oil for this motor, and can I go to a lower oil ratio safely ?? There has been much improvement in lubes and oils than was available even a short time ago. Any less smoke or gunk in the water is better, but care and lube to the bronze bearings ??

Many synthetics claim to be better, but I'm not sure if I want to try something, when others with more experience have done good research on this already. Any ideas on better oil additives, and ones I could go to safely are welcome.

Thanks a lot, Cal

AND -- I got new puel pump, complete water pump, motor advice, and more for my Evvie. 48, from iBoats crew members. GREAT PLACE TO GET PARTS AND HELP!!

If the motor had roller bearings in it, I wouldn't hesitate to thin the oil mix a bit - I do that in some of my larger old OMCs running a 32:1 mix.

However, I run 24:1 in all of my plain bearing, post 1950 motors. The oil does more than lubricate - it cushions parts and acts as a sealant, so the volume of oil is just as critical as the lubricity.

Use 100% Synthetic TCW-3 Outboard oil if you want less smoke and biodregradeability. That's all I use anymore. Mix it 24:1 like you are supposed to.
