I got a buddy picking up an old boat that has an evinrude 40 on it, the PO states it hasn't been on the water since 95. aside from a water pump impeller( are they still available?) any odd ball stuff that he should be leery of? he's getting the package boat, trailer & OB engine for $150.00 so even if he ends up re-powering it's a good deal, but it would be better if we can get the current set up back to par.

Parts for those older motors can be easier to find than parts for much newer motors.--------------They sold a lot of them which means demand and therefor a steady supply of parts is on hand.

My last motor was a 1965 Evirude 40 H.P. electric shifter. The only part I had trouble finding for that thing was the push button control for the electric shift. I rebuilt the gear box too with new electro magnets and found them and the clutch springs with no effort at all. I live in Michigan and found the controller in the State of Oregon on Craigslist. You can find anything out there if you know where to look. I now have a 75 horse 1965 Evinrude which I am having no problem finding any parts for. I am almost done with it now, and only invested about $300 in parts for it by doing my own work with the help of the guys on this forum. Good luck with that Evinrude!

well he picked it up, we messed with it for about an hour and it runs. everything seems to work the way it should. he even talked them down to $100.00 for the entire package. he plans on taking it out sunday for the maiden voyage, I'll be out there too breaking in my rebuilt engine as well. I see good times ahead!!!
