It does run really nice,but you must have the lower unit deeper in the barrel because the water pump must be submerged when running the engine.It is not a vacuum pump.

I completely restored a 1956 5.5. Nice little motors and smooth runners, but yea, you should have it in water at least to where the lower mounts are on the motorleg. That will put the level, just above the waterpump.
