I'm removing the lower unit on the 40hp selectric and where do I disconnect the wiring into the lower unit? I see it going thru the shift plate but don't see a disconnection point

Step #1 is to remove the rear half of the lower cowling.------Then find the rubber boots on the connectors.-----Then disconnect wires.-----Then remove wire guide from exhaust housing and slide the guide off.------The rest be easy.-----Oh,---Don't forget to attach something to the wires to pull them back up.

So when you say rear half you mean the exhaust cowling?? I found a rubber boot but no connectors. So are the connectors behind what would be the shift connection on a manual unit, Two screws, remove the top and loosen the bottom and the plate moves out of the way. Thanks Racerone

Just read and follow the steps in the above post.---All very simple to do.----You have to take that rear cowling off anyway to get at the one hidden bolt !!----NOTE ---Clearly I said --" rubber boots " ---So you would look for 2 of them.----If those rubber boots are not there the motor is not factory original and then who knows what you have to do.
