Good day everyone,

I've got a new to me 1963 Evinrude Sportwin 10hp. Know nothing about the motors history. Got it running a few days ago and it's running pretty good. Noticed that there's water "peeing" out both sides of the exhaust housing, small hole on both sides and some out the exhaust port. I'm experienced with the 1955 to 1958 Johnsons but nothing more. So my question is, is there suppose to be any water coming out of those holes or just through the exhaust port. Likewise would plugging those holes with a small bolt cause any issues. There is a thermostat on the motor and I was thinking it might be a bypass till the thermostat opens but honestly not sure and can't find anything online.

Thanks in advance.

On the 1963 model I gave to the 8 year old grandson water poured out all the time.----Have you checked your thermostat ?----I often find them missing or stuck open.

Thermostat's there, closed, will check if it works. Your motor poured out of the holes on both sides? I know it'll pour out of the exhaust port but never seen one that poured from three locations.

Sorry, lemme rephrase this. The thermostat is present, will test it. The hole circled in the picture is where the water is coming from, identical hole on the other side. At idle, and higher rpm, it's throwing water 4-5 feet to the respective side, with some water coming out of the exhaust.

Not normal. In fact, it could be disaster to the powerhead. The drive shaft runs in an isolation tube to keep water and exhaust away from the lower crankshaft seal and splines. Some water normally escapes from the water pump, into that isolation tube, but is drained off at the bottom end, near the lower rubber motor mounts. The holes you are looking at, at the top end, are vent holes and water should never rise that high, much less squirt out 5 feet. The danger is, the water might enter the crankcase through the lower crankshaft seal and cause catastrophic rust damage to all the bearings

I'm not there to look at it so don't know what's causing it, but you need to remove the lower unit and check the water pump housing for extreme wear (too much water escaping) or missing spacer tube and/or seals.

So turns out the issue was that the drain holes you mentioned near the rubber mounts were plugged with fine sand. Previous owner must have ran it into something. Cleared out the holes and now it's flowing out like it should, no water jets.

Thanks very much your help.

The spacer, part #305304, is most likely missing. It sits above the water pump. Had the same problem with my 1962 Johnson 10hp.
