I had to replace a broken recoil spring.

Once I reassembled the recoil plate, I'm having a tough time getting it to engage with the pull start. Seems to gain traction on the first pull and then slips.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Did you lubricate the pawl spring and groove? Don't. Friction there is what makes the pawl swing out.

Negative. I used a small amount of grease in just a few areas inside the pull plate, but cleaned up any excess.

Am I not lining up correctly?

Perhaps explain in more detail what the issue is.-----Recoil spring not retracting the pulley ??----Or pawl not engaging the flywheel to start motor.----We are not looking over your shoulder.---Explain stuff.------I rebuilt a 1963 10 HP a few years ago for the 8 year old grandson.----He started it himself at 8 years old.----Wonderful motor and nothing on it is complicated.

My apologies. New to the boat motor world as it is my first.

I replaced the broken recoil spring. The pull string is now retracting as it should.

The pawl is not engaging the fly wheel as it should. It seems to have traction on the first pull and then slips and is loose on the second pull. Not sure where to go from here.

Thanks for the input so far!

As clearly stated the friction on the wee spring link pulls the pawl into position.----So check that.----If pawl is new , make sure it is not binding on the pin.

when recoiled the small arrow should be lined up with J ZONE for Johnson models

I am using the same rope as I was before when it was working properly.

When I wound the spring, I lined up the arrow within the JF range. Once the rope is recoiled it ends in that spot out of the range.

When it is lined up it is easier to pull over.-----If you are able bodied / high school wrestling champion this alignment does not matter !

Copy. Is there an alignment necessary when I bolt it back on? The first pull it catches. The second pull there's no traction.

Some folks put grease on the wire spring.----A big no,no.-----It has to present some drag to pull on the pawl.----And the spindle must be assembled correctly with a wee pin that goes into a hole.
