Hi all!
New boat owner here, recently purchased a 1963 Crestliner Del Rio with this Johnson motor (4VAL-15E). Boat is all cleaned up and the motor runs (smokes A LOT). I have reverse in the boat but forward gear does not seem to engage. Looks to me like a problem with the throttle cable not being the right size but I’m not entirely sure. I’ve tried looking online for parts manuals and the like but have come up empty.

Any suggestions/tips/advice on what the problem could be or potential fixes?

Thanks!

Get a manual specific to your motor. I believe that is an electric shift model.

I can’t seem to locate the manual for my exact motor. How similar is a 1960 4VSL-12 to a 63 4VAL-15E? Can find those manuals all day long but would hate to get something that isn’t compatible.

If it is an electramatic the throttle cable has nothing to do with the shifting.---NOTHING.------Find the wires going to the lower unit at the motor.----A green and blue.----Do an ohm check from green to ground.----Do an ohm check from blue to ground.----They should read the same.---Post your numbers and we go from that for further checks.

Considerable differences between 1960 & 1963.

Put 12 volts to the green wire and see if prop turns one way with some drag and locks up in the other direction.
