- - New to forum, 1st post - -

Recently purchased a 1963 40 horse Evinrude. I purchased a Selco service manual and can not find any compression stats anywhere. Can someone help me out with this ? Also the woodruff key for the flywheel was all gnarled up. I need to find a new one. None of the autoparts stores around carry them ( NAPA, Advance, Autozone ). If anyone has a tip on where I might can find these also it would be great. I did read the opening about searching for previous topics and didn't see anything relating to this, but if there is maybe I'll learn my way around the site before to long. Thanks for any help and I look forward to the posting.

Re: 1963 Lark IV 40 HP ?

Welcome to Iboats!

There are no compression specs for OMC outboards. The 5psi Seloc seems to pull out of thin air is overly close (section 2-3). OMC says no more than a 10% variance, and that's what I go with. You do want over 60psi though, and hopefully somewhere north of 90. But those actual numbers are dependant on many variables, which is why OMC never published them.

The woodruff key is still available from your local Johnson or Evinrude dealer. PN is 302602, and there's another P/N for a 5 pack of them. They're only a couple bucks. But you may need to clean up the crankshaft taper/flywheel fit. Have a look here:
http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=029310;p=1#000022

The woodruff key is a little different from your regular hardware store ones, and if it's got a marking on it, the marking should be on the lower end of the key, towards the ignition system. Don't ask me why this is. :D

Hope that helps! Good luck!
