Im looking for some help, kind of new to boat motors.

i have a 1963 sea king model number gg18801a 5 hp

the motor runs, starts up on the 2nd pull,i believe the fuel mixture is 24.1.

first question is how can i tell if the impeller is working?

second is what do i set the 2 turn knobs to to make it run good, they both are turned all the way to the left?

third is what oil do i use for the lower unit.i would like to change it

im also having a hard time getting the lower unit off.any help

also the boat is a old starcraft,it came with a steering setup and a throttle control, but the boat is a all aluminum 14ft boat,it was just sitting in the boat

Re: 1963 sea king 5 hp help

Motor is a 63 Built for M/W by Tthe Gale devision of OMC.
It is basically identical to the E/J motors of that year.Initial setting is 3/4 turn out from gently bottomed.Motor warm set the high speed at speed to the best, slightly toward rich.set idle in gear. You may have to remove the knob.Install with the pointer in the middle.Fuel mix is 24:1 use TCW3 rated oil.Gearcase use outboard gear lube sae90.water should burble out the relief port mid way up the leg come out pretty good at speed. You will need to remove the power head to unhook the shift rod. These are darn nice little motors routine parts are available under the E/J applications.

Re: 1963 sea king 5 hp help

I just bought a 58' 14 ft. Starcraft a little over a month ago, and a 63' 5 hp Sea King motor a couple weeks ago.
