Engine is stuck in reverse, but if motor is tilted and set back down engine will go into neutral or reverse on occasion. Problem just started after a morning of fishing. Shop mechanic said the problem was either a loose or broke spring/pin/bracket on the shift arm located under the powerhead, which was an easy fix, but @ $60/hr I was adivsed that it wouldn't be worth the cost due to labor involed in removing powerhead. My brother in law and I decided to fix it ourselves but are looking for any and all advice before digging in. We are both fairly decent mechanics, but always looking for advice. All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Get a manual. Your local library should have one of the aftermarket manuals that will cover that model.

The Seloc manual is fine for the job you're doing. It has pretty good illustrations of that part of the outboard.
