Does this model year 40 hp use the same propeller as previous years, (shear pin aft under a cap held in place with a cotter pin)?

The 1964 Evinrude catalog on "The Old OMC Site" describes this motor as having no shear pin, which prompts my question. I have a Michigan bronze 4 blade that turned for many years on my father's 1966 Johnson 40, which I hope to return to service.

Thanks for the great help.

Re: 1964 Evinrude 40 prop

That's not a shear pin, it's a drive pin.

At least I think that's the line. All my prop sources indicate the '64 used pin drive props, just like the '63 and the '65. All these props had rubber cushions like indicated in the ad, too.
But returning the bronze prop into service might not be such a good idea. For one thing, it's got to be the right prop for the boat - and by the sounds of it, that 4 blade is for a heavy craft. Second is that bronze props are heavy, and are very hard on the gearcase. It might be best to leave that one polished up on the wall.

Good luck!

Re: 1964 Evinrude 40 prop

Just for information, my 1969 40HP Evinrude uses the pin driven prop as well ("shear pin aft under a cap held in place with a cotter pin"). Looks like they used that set up for a number of years. That cotter pin is pretty important to ensuring you keep your prop...not a bad idea to replace it with a new one every year.

Cotter pin falls falls out, cap falls off, pin drop out, prop falls off... not a pretty story.

Unfortunately these props are a little too easy to remove. I left my motor tilted up this past summer, to avoid leaving the lower end in the water 24/7. Someone else decided my old beat up prop would look better in their possesion....and stole it. First and last time I left my motor tilted up when moored. Live 'n learn.
