Hi we recently aquired a 1964 evinrude 75hp .. after a few trips to the river we got it running ok. yesterday I was tring to tune it while my brother drove and we gained a few HP but it still seems like it has more to give. I cant imagine were going faster than like 20 25 mph just getting the front of the boat out of water. Any tips on tuning the carb would be great. Also the throttle cable is brand new but it seems like it dosent catch in every spot some times i have to move the leaver back and fourth to get response. Thanks in advance.

Your motor probably isn't running on all four cylinders.

The cable wires should be "kinked" during installation of the ends, or they will slip. The OMC cable wires were annealed so that could happen, but unfortunatly the aftermarket suppliers never got the message.

Do a compression test,
The do a spark test ( not with a sparkplug). Use 3/8th inch gap on tester.
Then rebuild carbs with carb kits.
Watch videos on Youtube if you don't know how to rebuild carbs.

I would do all the above before fiddin with carb settings.
change gear oil, look for water.
Draw a bit of fuel into a glass bottle and look for water seperation.
Preferably , install water seperator.
