I just bought a 1964 9.5 evinrude sporttwin for cheap. Didnt run but looked great lots of newish parts and only took a simple carb clean to get it going. Put it on my boat and was idling it as I noticed the engine compartment filling with water and then the engine dies. Tilt it up drain the water out and itll start and purr until 20 seconds later when the water fills up again. It appears to be coming from the front of the shaft towards the transom but I'm not 100%. Also it looks like the previous owner put some sort of foam on the underside of the short shaft at some point could this be causing part of the problem? Would like to know what it is and if it worth moving forward with it. Thanks

sounds like expanding foam to plug a leak? Not sure where, based on description. Pics?

the foam may have been a quick fix to stopexhaust fumes coming up due the seal failure in the lower part of the lower housing… water may be sqwirting out the rubber bellows at the rear and it is filling the lower cavity till you see it flooding the compartement up front

how is the tell tale spitting water at the rear … heavy flow medium small flow out ??

you should see th source of water with the cowl removed .

and....look for body cracks on the lower housing.. I have a 9.5 with a crack the previous owner must have hit something hard to crack the housing

First, those motors are notorious for exhaust leaks into the cowling, from several places. So it's almost a given that some genius was trying to block an exhaust leak with the foam. Didn't work, did it (ha).

Want a guess? Seal is missing from top of water pump housing, so exhaust pressure is blowing water up through the drive shaft isolation tube and out the vent hole at the top. I'll give you the address to send my prize to, if I guessed correct.
