I grew up fishing from this boat with my father and brothers. It has been sitting for years and hadnt been started or even looked at since. it has been sitting about 10 years, until a year ago. At the time (10 years ago) it was not running properly and would sputter and die, and never idle well. Im taking this project on by myself. last year i rebuilt the carb, and it still was not running as well as i would have liked. It sat until today. last year when i initially looked at the engine i didnt like the play in the fuel filter. It just didnt seem to seal up as well as it should have. I also didint like the slop in the fuel l lines and connections. and some fuel would leak out of the connections. When running my father took immaculate care of the engine and boat. Today replaced all of the fuel hoses and connections, all fitting perfectly snug now. got some fresh gas. connected the engine flusher, and cranked her over. took a couple second of cranking but she fired right up and purred like a kitten. well a two stoke kitten. I didnt want to rev he engine too much as im only using the engine flush, but it ran really well. I think the reason it wasnt running well after the carb rebuild i did last year was all of the slop in the fuel lines and connections. So engine is running... My question is other than the water pump, what else could i look at in order to make sure all is well? I will try and post picures when i save them to my computer. ANY comments, positive or negative are greatly appreciated as im new to this. I take all criticism constructively.

Thanks guys
-Robert

The impeller is likely the most important. I would also change the gear oil.

Checking the compression is a good idea, first to know where you stand, and also to use as a guide if you have future problems.

Checking spark on an inline tester will give you an indication of the strength of the ignition system. It should jump a 3/8" gap with a bright blue ZAP!!

Thank you for your quick reply. I'll go ahead and order an impeller and replace it as well as change the gear oil. I forgot to mention that the thread of the plug is stripped. i dont actually know where the plug is. Any ideas as to how to repair?

Thank you.

The threads in the head for the spark plug hole?

No, the threads on the hull of the boat. For the drain plug.

That was my first idea, as it would be much cheaper than having any welding, drilling and tapping a new hole. The current drain hole is about 1 1/4 inches in diameter. I have not seen rubber lockiing drain plugs that are that large, but i havent looked too hard either. My concern would be that when the rubber expands, there wouldnt be enough purchase on the aluminum to make a real tight fit.

HI gogetter. Your "drain" is actually a "scupper valve" which is designed to let you pull the plug while underway (sounds crazy I know) to allow water to drain out the back of the boat. My old tinny has one just like it. However, I just use it as a regular drain and stop it with an adjustable rubber plug per the previous posts (see pic). Here are some handy links for your motor as well. Cool old boat you got there and shinny too.

Thats not crazy. Look up my Uncles Patented "Baldwin Boat Bailer" It sunk my Dad's boat 12 times in the 50-60's
