I need to remove the lower unit in my 1964 Evinrude starflite 70hp in order to change the impeller. How do I support the lower unit so that I don't have to disconnect all the wires and tubes? One thought is to build an extension, made of wood, off the back of the trailer to support the very heavy lower unit. Any suggestions?
If you have an experience changing the impeller on a large outboard, I would appreciate any suggestions/hints that you have that would make the project less daunting.

Model # is ?----It is a 75 or 90 HP I believe.-----The wires are disconnected FIRST.-----The lower unit is not heavy at all.----The lower unit is easy to remove.----Did many of them back in the day.

To change the impeller you need to remove the LU.
Pull it from the engine and for example put it in a vice.
When removing and putting it back I would suggest you to use a floor jack.
I use a floor jack when pulling and put back lager LUs.

In addition to unhooking the Wires, you will also have to pass the Wire Harness-Cable into the Exhaust Housing in Order to drop the Gearcaseimg155.jpg
