I'm attempting to replace the impeller on a recently purchased outboard but do not have an exploded diagram or manual to help in this effort. I can drop the lower unit by removing the four bolts and can open a gap big enough to see the water pump impellar housing, the shift shaft, and the water inlet tube on top of the pump housing. However I'm not sure how to complete the disassembly.

1) do I need to remove the prop and get into the gear head to disconnect the shift rod so the lower unit will drop? Is there anything else other than the shift rod keeping the lower unit from dropping so I can get to the impellar housing?

2) Is there anyplace on line that has exploded diagrams of outboards or better yet step by step instructions that I could take a look at without having to throw $40 for a manual? I would send someone $5 to copy the impeller pages from a 1964 manual and fax them to me.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

OLD GABE

Hi Gabe,
On that model, you must remove the powerhead to access the shift rod disconnect at the shift handle. Be prepared to either salvage the base gasket to use as a pattern, or purchase a new gasket at a dealer.
Try your local library for a basic manual... The pieces at the top of the driveshaft are somewhat critical in their order of replacement.
Good luck!
- Scott

Hi Gabe
Welcome to the board. On this 5.5hp model you have to remove the powerhead in order to gain access to disconnect the shift rod. You will also need a new power head to exhaust housing gasket. Manuals can be had at the public library no charge. I have bought manuals for less than $5. at swap meets and G-sales. If you want to keep this little motor running good, it is well worth the fourty bucks for an after market Clymer or Seloc manual.

Re: 1964 Johnson 5.5HP CD-21A Impeller replacement HELP!

So its the old "gotta pull the engine to replace the starter" scenario. I guess I'm a little bit surprised that it was designed that way but maybe its not that hard to do.

If I pull the power head and diconnect the shift shaft the whole thing should come right out of the bottom? No need to get into the lower unit? Right?

By the way...........What a great discussion board! thanks for the quick responses!

Ole Gabe, it's not as bad as you think. That powerhead pops off pretty easily. Still, they stopped making you do that in 1965. Lucky you eh? :)
Yes, when you pull the powerhead then the whole lower unit will come off with a driveshaft and shiftshaft sticking out of it. Replacing the impeller doesn't get you into taking apart the lower unit.
You can get a new powerhead base gasket from your local Johnny/Rude dealer (PN 313065), from Iboats, or from NAPA autoparts (18-2901 for them).
