I just received this boat and it has the 1964 johnson meteor 90hp motor. My problem is the only way to keep it running is to have the choke dial fully on. We are using fresh 87 octane, new spark plugs, luvrimatic tc-w3 2 cycle outboard motor oil. We just cleaned the carb and made sure everything was working properly any ideas would be appreciated.

Sounds like a clear fuel delivery problem. When you say you "cleaned the carb," do you mean that you went through the whole procedure, including installing a new carb kit and blowing out all passages? If not, that's the next step. Also, how long has this engine been sitting without running? How old are the hoses and tank?

Also, check the entire fuel delivery system, from the tank to the hoses under the cowling and the fuel pump. If the motor's been sitting for a while, there's probably crud and old gas residue in there that will find itself inevitably to small orifices in the carburetor.

Once you get everything cleaned out properly, you'll probably be set.

It has been sitting for over a year, i didn't put a new carb kit on it but i went through every nook and cranny and made sure it was clean, as far as how old the tank and hoses are i don't know because the guy that gave me the boat wasn't sure himself, the tank looks old but seems to be working fine, should the primer bulb get soft after the engine has started?
