Hello out there...

I am a newbie to the forum. Have owned ol' Desperado for several years now and have done some restoration to the limits of my poor mechanical ability. She is a 1964 Starcraft 18 ft, I/O
Alumuinum hull with 110 G.M. inline 4 cyl. with what I think is an I drive.

I would be thrilled to hear from anyone else who has a similar relic as mine.I am always searching for problem solutions for the outdrive and this fall is no exception. "FROWN"

She has decided not to drain the oil from the upper gear case and it is milky. The bottom gear oil drained clean and clear. Was wondering if anyone might have an idea as to why upper oil did not drain out the drain plug because I think it should all drain from the same spot? There are two drain screws on the upper gear housing. They are on either side and paralell to each other. In the past when I have drained the oil at the lower casing the top drained as well but this year it did not.

As near as I can figure out, the outdrive is somewhere between serial#'s 1537370 and 2044033
I attempted to remove the cap on top of the housing but it seems to be attached internally to a gear or even the water pump as someone suggested.

If anyone can enlighten me as to a possible solution I would be much obliged..
Thanks in advance

Re: 1964 mercruiser I drive problem

i can't help much. but here's what i've found.
with 110 G.M. inline 4 cyl. with what I think is an I drive.
in '64 best i can tell, was the second year of mercruiser i/o's ('63 was the first year, '62 there were no i/o's). you may have a IA drive. i don't know anything about a 1A other than it's not a mc-1. i don't believe servicing it will be like a mc-1 either. you really need to get a hold of service manual #1. it'll have the facts in it for you. best i can do for an online version is this. not the best, but better than nothing. choose mercruiser and s/m #1. also, best i understand, some of the real old mercruisers truly did have separate drain/fill locations that were specifically for the upper or the lower. ya gotta drain and fill both. best i can do for ya from only reading.. hopefully someone who's really been there, done that will come by.

Re: 1964 mercruiser I drive problem

Well, it turns out there was an "Early" I drive that came out prior to the 1A,1B, and 1C drives. Not much info in the manual for that model either, but it is hard to find
Anyway, here is all it says on changing the gear lube on that drive, and the capacity chart.

Here is a link to download the manual the above came from.
