hello all, please bear with me, lol!

so, I repaired my lower unit, replaced the broken spring clutch thing with a while used hub that I bought off the internet (cloi, hub, gear and all) for a measly $10. and my ciol was definately broken, the new one is not. I get it in the water and anything over about 8mph and the motor revs will go up but, the boat will not go faster. now, what Im about to tell you is probably my problem, but I figured Id check here first....

after I put the lower unit back together, double checked everything and what not, the needle bearings that go on the driveshaft fell apart, and the only thing I had to put them back in without them falling apart was automotive bearing grease, also, the local evinrude dealer ASSURED me that regular lower unit 85w90 would work in my selectric shift, even tho I had recalled something about either type C or Premium blend being required for the older selectric shift units.

so, if I change out the gear lube and get that auto bearing grease out of there, as well as the wal-mart special 85w90, will my slipping go away? or am I screwed?

McAdam

Besides draining the oil, I would fill the gear case with solvent, and drain it again. Use type-C lube. My experience with that system is if it slips, the hub, and spring are done. One good thing, those parts only cost you ten dollars. It is very hard to judge the condition of those two parts just by looking.

'OMC Premium Blend' is 'Type C'. They renamed it some time ago.

The stuff they sell that's like the 85w90 you got is called 'OMC Hi Vis'.

damn! i thought the hub and what not was good as long as it wasnt broken, oh well. Ill try changine the fluid and see if that helps, if not, looks like I have to spring the $320 they want for a new clutch spring. oh well. boating is almost over now. only saving grace is that in automotive diffs with clutches (posi-traction) you ned to put in a friction modifyer in with the 85w90 otherwise, the clutches will slip and you wont have posi. hopefully its the same. damn. lol

McAdam

What about reverse? if your reverse gear set is ok, then swap them over and use them for forward. Also check your prop hub to make sure that it isn't slipping.
